Captain accused for landing illegally on Senkaku

Date Posted: 2001-10-13

The 11th Maritime Security Office sent a report on a 63-year-old boat captain in Ishigaki to the Prosecutors’ Office, Thursday, on charges of violating the Boating Safety Law. The MSA officials questioned the suspect about taking assembly members of Fukuoka City and other people to Senkaku Islands, of which Japan, China and Taiwan are claiming possession.

According to an investigation by the agency, the boat that carried the members weighs about five tons. The Senkaku Islands are out of the allowed operational area for a boat of that size.

Mitsuhiro Takayama, an assembly member of Fukuoka City spoke in public about the incident on Wednesday, Oct. 3. He said that a group of six people, including some members of Ishigaki City assembly, had landed on one of the islands in late May, and placed there a flag criticizing the Japanese diplomacy concerning the dispute over the territory. He said that they had stayed on the island for about thirty minutes.
