Prefecture officials accuse U.S. Military crossing bounds

Date Posted: 2001-10-13

According to sources in Okinawa Prefecture Government, they had received reports, Saturday, that armed American military personnel had been in active security duty off base near the White Beach Naval Port in Katsuren Town. Prefecture officials claimed that such activity is against the Status of Forces Agreement between Japan and the U.S., and it is also a violation against the Knife and Gun Control Law of Japan.

According to news reports, an American serviceman in uniform who carried a gun with him and accompanied with a Japanese security guard, approached media reporters who were watching movements in the port on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The reporters said that the serviceman and the Japanese guard tried to restrict them from taking pictures.

On Wednesday, a service member accompanied by a Japanese security guard appeared at Hejikiya Park overlooking the White Beach from a long distance, and took pictures of the media reporters with their permission.
