September wettest month in record in Kume

Date Posted: 2001-10-08

The September rainfall on Kume Island recorded the highest monthly precipitation in the prefecture ever with 1,303 mm of rain pouring down since the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory started recording.

The record rainfall was caused by typhoons that circled the prefecture for several days during the month. The previous maximum rainfall was observed in Yonaguni Island in October in 98 when 1,223 mm of rain fell during that month. In Naha, the rainfall reached 1,036 mm, the third largest ever. Both in Naha and Kume Island, it rained more than half of the average per year in just one month.
