Two arrested for fraud, other criminal schemes

Date Posted: 2001-10-08

Urasoe Police arrested a 52-year-old director and a 49-year-old representative of Okinawa Getto Corporation on charges of fraud. The Police are grilling the two on suspicion of defrauding a 41-year-old transportation firm owner of about 4 million in cash. The two reportedly have confessed to the charges.

According to a police investigation, both suspects asked the company owner to invest in a new venture by Okinawa Getto Corp. in return of new shares. However, when asking the investment they had no intention of engaging in new business. The man deposited the money in an bank account of the corporation, and the suspects simply took the money.

The men are also suspected of urging local governments since 1993 to promote growing gettou, a local weed used for making traditional paper and other products. In Tamagusuku Village, the village encouraged farmers to grow the weed as a new cash crop, and more than seventy farmers planted the crop, but whole plan failed without any prospect of sales that the company had promised. Okinawa Getto Corp. had made money by selling the farmers seeds of the plant.

As police suspect that the men have been involved in more criminal schemes, the investigation to their activities continues.
