Four arrested for illegal dumping

Date Posted: 2001-10-08

Police offices in Naha, Tomigusuku and Miyako Island arrested four people Sep. 25, on charges of violating the Waste Disposal Law.

Naha Police has sent reports on two men to Naha District Court so far. A 57-year-old man was questioned for dumping an electric stove on a private property, and a 51-year-old man for dumping a sofa near a garbage collection site. In Tomigusuku, a man was charged for throwing away two used tires on Senaga Island. In Miyako Island, a man was charged for dumping 200 kilograms of construction waste.

Recently, the Naha District Court ordered a man to pay a 1 million fine for illegally dumping nine scrapped cars in August.

The Okinawa Prefecture Police Department stated that they would be even stricter in the future on enforcing laws protecting the environment. They reminded the public that paying a disposing fee is much cheaper than fine.
