Fist section of A.P. Wakasa tunnel on site

Date Posted: 2001-10-08

The first section of a under water tunnel that will connect Naha Airport and Wakasa in Naha City was carried by tug boats from Urasoe to the installing site in Naha Saturday.

The section is considered to be one of the biggest of its kind ever built in Japan, with the length of 92 meters, width of 37 meters and height of 8.7 meters. The section weighs 30,000 tons.

The design of the section utilizes the latest technologies and could be the first to be actually used in the world. The main feature of the unit is a movable joint that resists the effects of earthquakes. The first section of the tunnel is scheduled to be installed in its final position on Oct. 1 and will be connected to the part of the tunnel that is on the groundside.

When complete, this under water tunnel will be 724 meters long and it will consist of eight buried parts. It is scheduled to be completed in 2008.
