Elderly to pay more for care from April

Date Posted: 2001-10-08

The Prefectural Insurance for care of the elderly scheme that was began last year, has proven to fall short of funds already after the first year of the plan’s implementation. Officials say that the deficit was caused due to larger than expected expenses for the insurance benefits in 33 local municipalities, according to the Prefectural Office of Longevity in Society said.

The prefecture paid about a total of ¥3 billion more in benefits than originally estimated. To cover the deficit, the prefecture had top use national funds earmarked for caring services. However, it is likely that the premiums will rise sharply next year for those older than 65 when the law is revised next April. Presently the premiums in Okinawa are already at the highest in the nation.
