Date Posted: 2001-10-01

The Animal Care Week got on way on Thursday the main theme “Let’s live together and let’s get along!” The week will feature various animal related events, campaigns and even a memorial service for the souls of stray animals destroyed by officials.

Organizers of the week, referring to data provided by Prefectural officials say that the Prefectural Animal Care Facility in Osato Village captured about 12,500 dogs last year, 90 percent of which were executed. They point out that the number of dogs destroyed in Okinawa compared with the prefecture’s population was 4.2 times as many as the nation’s average in 1999. Cases of dog’s biting humans are two times more. They also claim that many pets are still abandoned to forests in the northern Okinawa, and they are seriously damaging the ecosystem of the region.
