Date Posted: 2001-10-01

The 4th International Conference on Okinawa Studies opened Saturday at Bankoku Shinryokan in Nago City.

After the opening ceremony, Emperor’s brother, Prince Akishino-miya gave a memorial lecture to participating scholars. In the afternoon, a panel discussion was held where panelists discussed on the theme “Okinawan Studies in the World.”

On Sunday, the venue moved to the Prefectural Art College, where participants attempted understanding the various aspects of the Okinawan culture.

103 people including 14 foreigners participated in the conference. Originally the conference was scheduled to be held in Bonn, Germany on September 27 and 28 but was canceled because of the terrorist bombing incident in New York City and Washington D.C.
