Prefecture to provide free connection to IT firms

Date Posted: 2001-10-01

Okinawa Prefecture officials announced a plan to lease a large capacity high-speed data line owned by a private company. The line connects Okinawa and Tokyo, and the prefecture will provide IT related companies with an access to the line for free of charge starting next fiscal year.

Funds totaling ¥400 million earmarked for this project was already in this year’s budget request, and the plan will become concrete next year. Currently, the prefecture subsidizes 80 percent of telecommunication fees to IT companies operating in Okinawa, and this option will be replaced with the new project.
