Tomishiro becomes City

Date Posted: 2002-03-29

Tomishiro became the 11th city in Okinawa on Apr. 1 changing its status straight from a village to a city. Village officials have considered the status change since 24 years ago. The village government was established in 1908.

When the idea of changing Tomishiro’s status was brought to the local assemble in 1978, the assembly decided to wait until the number of residents reaches 50,000, a requirement for city status, where a town is required to have only 8,000 residents. Based on the growth figures at the time, assembly members figured that the 50,000 would be reached in 1985. However, the population growth all but stopped in the early ‘80s and the estimate was changed to 1985, and then pushed to 1990.

Although some assembly members suggested that Tomishiro become a town first, a subsequent survey found that the majority of residents did not support the idea but wanted to wait until the municipality could become a city. Finally, last year’s census concluded that Tomishiro had reached the milestone, and could become Okinawa’s eleventh city.
