First oranges of season shipped

Date Posted: 2002-01-17

The season’s first harvest of Okinawa’s winter fruit, the tankan orange, was shipped on Jan. 8 from JA Yanbaru in Nago City. After undergoing classification by color and shape, approximately 25 tons of the citrus fruit were packed in boxes and sent to various locations around the country. According to JA Yanbaru although this year’s tankan is somewhat smaller in size than average, it is also sweeter than normal. The agricultural cooperative expects a total of 406 tons of the fruit to be shipped this year. Orchards in Izumi, Motobu Town, were opened on Saturday to members of the public who want to pick the oranges themselves. Information on tankan harvesting, which will continue until March, can be obtained at Izumi Drive-in through January and in front of Izumi Pine Farm in February.
