30,000 evacuated as WWII dud removed in Naha City

About 30,000 resident had to evacuate their homes in Naha City’s Shikina area as a JSDF ordnance removal team removed a WWII era unexploded bomb that was unearthed at a construction site. The operation that started at 10 a.m. took one hour and 40 minutes to complete. Naha City officials had rented 10 buses to help evacuate people who did not have their own transportation. 10 ambulances with crews assisted disabled. Officials estimate that it will take up to another 30 to 50 years before all unexploded ordnance from the war will be removed.
