Date Posted: 2001-09-21

According to Yaeyama Police, Ishigaki Island, the number of people who sleep on the streets from January to the end of August reached 244, 15 more than the same period last year. The number has been increasing over the last several years.

The police points out that the area is popularly known as a “drinking paradise” considering that the number of police reports referring to people who are constantly drunk is larger than that in Miyako or Okinawa main island.

Viewing the number by month, the police say that the number tends to increase during summer months. According to those who sleep on the streets, it is cool on the asphalt and that feels good during the hot summer.
