Sugarcane production up from year before

Date Posted: 2001-09-21

The Okinawa Prefecture General Office, Agriculture and Fishery section announced Thursday its estimate of the sugarcane crop this year.

According to the estimate, 865,000 tons of sugarcane are expected to be harvested this year, which is seven percent more than a year before when bad weather affected the crop. The total area to grow sugarcane is slightly less that previous year, meaning those farming the crop are using more effective methods in the production. Officials added that farmers tend to idle their land or change to other crops as they become older.
