Waste incinerator causes big headache in Miyako

Date Posted: 2002-03-29

A facility for burning industrial waste in Hirara City on Miyako Island that opened for business last November is becoming a major headache for local officials and residents alike because of the foul smell that the incinerator emits. Things have gotten so bad that city officials recently handed out protective masks to all of the area’s residents.

Hirara City Mayor Akira Ishimine assures the residents that the city is doing all it possibly can to fix the problem. “We would like to apologize to everyone who is affected by this problem and we are doing our best to combat the problem,” Ishimine said while urging people to wear the masks for their own safety. But area residents are not convinced. “We don’t need this facility in our village. We want it closed and to get our clean and safe air back,” one angry resident declared.
