Water related deaths back to normal numbers

Date Posted: 2001-09-21

The Okinawa Prefectural Police, Life Security Section announced Friday the latest statistics of water related accidents during the past months.

According to the report, 16 people died in 33 accidents that were reported to the police. That is seven more dead and 17 more accidents compared to the previous year. The report states that most fatal accidents, five in all, occurred while swimming. Three were died while snorkeling and another three while fishing.

According to the Police, they assume that the smaller number of accidents last year was because of tight patrols on the islandís coasts prior and during the G-8 Summit. The average number of accidents per year over the last five years is 30 with 14 cases of them fatal.
