Underage drinking lands girl in hospital, storeowner in court

Motobu Police investigated a convenience store in the town Sunday afternoon, on suspicion of violating of the law prohibiting juveniles from drinking alcohol.

The storeowner and a clerk were questioned of selling alcohol to two junior high school girls. One of the girls had been in a hospital because of an acute alcohol poisoning. The police are preparing to file charges against the 52-year-old owner and a 38-year-old staff member as soon as the suspicion is confirmed.

According to the investigation, the girls allegedly bought Awamori, beer and wine from the store and drank with friends on a near-by parking lot.

After the girls’ drinking party came to the light, the police reportedly later gave guidance to the girls.
