Baroque brass comes alive with best modern experts

Date Posted: 2001-09-07

Baroque music used to be played in European Courts in the 17th and 18th century. In the British traditions, brass music has taken an outstanding role. Combining these two traditions is the Baroque Brass of London, the only professional orchestra that plays music made between the 16th and 18th centuries exclusively for brass instruments, using the instruments of the time. More importantly, there are no other groups able to match them in the skill and experience of performing.

They receive non-stop requests to perform from all over Britain. The group has ten players, who have mastered the orthodox classic instruments. Those members spend most of their time playing with world-class ensembles or conductors of classic instruments, apart from certain periods they gather together only four times a year.

Michael Reared and Robert Howes formed the “Baroque Brass of London” in 1982. Their instruments were precisely recreated to match the real ones used more than two hundred years before. The sound of the trumpet is bright and pure. Sax Bat, a predecessor of the trombone makes surprisingly soft sound. The tune of Timpani is fresher and dryer compared to contemporary ones. Their first performance in Japan in 1999 disclosed to the Japanese audiences the magnificent and delicate sound the group has. No wonder that the local music critics dubbed them the “Brass Revolution”.
