Cool, Cono!

Date Posted: 2001-09-07

Many of the other Latin venues on Okinawa say that Cool, Cono! is a place where the more experienced Salsa dancers are likely to visit. This club, located right outside Camp Foster's Commissary Gate, has a very classy, comfortable interior and friendly atmosphere.

Owner Charles Colmenares and wife Naomi opened Cool, Cono! on August 19, 2000, just over a year ago on Naomi's birthday. They boast a large variety of music and drinks and agree that they are frequented by many of the island's most talented Salsa dancers.

While building Cool, Cono!, Charles says he tried to bring some of the same feelings to Okinawa that he saw while growing up in Venezuela. Charles was born in New York and moved to Venezuela when he was two years old. He lived here with his family until he finished high school and then moved back to America. He grew up with the Salsa scene. Charles hopes to take many of the influences he saw and integrate them into his own business. He says, "We wanted Cool, Cono! to be a place we would go to if we were going to go out." This golden rule has helped Cool, Cono! succeed in business and become established as one of the finer Salsa clubs on Okinawa. "This is our style," says Charles. "We didn't have anything in mind when we built Cool, Cono!, but we based ourselves in the colors of Mexico and tried to convey vibrant colors."

Like many of the other Salsa clubs on Okinawa, Cool, Cono! offers dance lessons. If you are interested in learning, come for a free lesson on Wednesdays from 8:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. If you already have quite a bit of experience but are looking to further your development, Cool, Cono! offers an intermediate class on Thursdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Admission to this class is 1,000 and includes one drink.

Though located so close to Camp Foster, Charles says Cool, Cono! receives a 50/50 group of American and Japanese customers. As Salsa hasn't really taken off with males in Okinawa, most of the Japanese customers are women, and most of the American customers are men from the military bases with Latin descent.

One advantage of Cool, Cono! over all the other Latin clubs on Okinawa is that it has a parking lot downstairs with adequate parking for about ten to fifteen cars. The others either has extremely limited parking or no parking at all. Another advantage is that Cool, Cono! is less than a one-minute drive from Camp Foster. Be sure to check this one out!
