Bomba Latina

Date Posted: 2001-09-07

Located directly across the street from the Americaya Army/Navy surplus store on Kokusai Street in Naha, Bomba Latina has more of a club-style feel than Salsatina but is a little less suitable for dancing than Latin Soul, as the floors are made of concrete. Still, people frequently visit Bomba Latina for a night of dancing to great Salsa music. This venue serves as a cafe, bar, and restaurant. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyday, and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Bomba Latina takes on a Cafe feel, serving empanadas (meat pies), taco rice, tacos, and Peruvian fried rice. Finally, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., the night begins with Bomba Latina serving as a full-fledged restaurant, bar, and club. Food and drinks are priced about the same as all of the other Salsa venues, with beer and mixed drinks ranging in price from between 500 and 700 and soft drinks costing 400.

According to owner Teddy Castillo, there are three ways that Bomba Latina is different from any of the other Salsa establishments on island. Where Salsatina has more of a restaurant feel and Cool Cono! has more of a club style feel, Bomba Latina has a combined atmosphere and is a good setting for eating, dancing, and having a few drinks with a friend. It is this combination of sorts that makes his place different. Castillo is originally from Peru but has been living on Okinawa for 10 years. He moved to Okinawa partly because of his business, then married a local woman. Last year, Castillo opened Bomba Latina in its original location near Slum Jam in Naha, and moved the business to Kokusai Street last April. He says that the atmosphere is much better than in its first location.

Bomba Latina has a fun, party-style atmosphere. Where Salsatina has more of a cozy feel than this place, Bomba Latina has a less inhibited atmosphere than Salsatina. This is a great spot to visit after leaving Salsatina for your second destination and is only a few blocks away. Most of the customers who visit Bomba Latina are Japanese, but many Latinos and other foreigners come as well. "We found this place three weeks ago and have come back every weekend since," says a service member who was having a drink with three of his friends.
