Windowless pig farm no solution to stinking problem

Date Posted: 2001-09-07

In an on-going battle over relocation of a pig farm that irks local residents with its foul odor, Ishikawa City officials have proposed a plan to construct a new windowless, and presumably odor-free, pig pens at the outskirts of the city.

Not so fast, say the opponents who do not want the pig farm in their neighborhood either. In order to force the city officials to reconsider, they have collected 479 signatures from local residents opposing the plan. The opponents handed the signatures over to the city administration Wednesday, Aug. 29 demanding a popular vote on the issue.

The city insists that moving the animals to the new windowless pen would be an effective countermeasure against the odor. The representatives of the opposing camp say that the new building would not solve the problem, judging by examples in other areas.
