First large scale disaster drill conducted in Naha

Date Posted: 2001-09-07

Naha City organized a disaster prevention drill Friday at Ameku Disaster Prevention Park and at a Wakasa residential area, for the first time with the Japanese Self Defense Force personnel participating. About 350 participants, plus motorcycles, cars, helicopters and two aircraft took part in the action under a scenario that a big earthquake hit Okinawa.

Another first was the participation of two dogs that are currently trained to become rescue dogs. There are no such certified dogs in Okinawa yet, but the two will continue their training to become the first. Their career got into a successful start as they were able to find a buried man under a collapsed wood and stone structure.
