Increasing number of juveniles victims of violent crimes

Date Posted: 2003-12-11

Okinawa Prefectural Police say that violent crime against juveniles, especially young girls, is increasing. Police reports show that over past month there were five incidents where underage children were targets of violent action. In one case, a high school girl was walking on the street when a male assailant attacked her from behind. The man apparently tried to steal the girl’s cell phone that she was using at the time, and when he failed to get the phone he began hitting her on her face. The police have yet to apprehend the man.

According to the National Police Agency, there were 126 kidnappings targeting children under 18 nationwide from January through the end of October. Six such cases took place in Okinawa. Most happened late night on dimly lit streets, parks, parking lots and in the vicinity of 24-hour convenience stores. The perpetrators in almost all cases were males between 20 and 50 years of age who targeted young girls for sexual purposes. Police are advising parents to warn their young girls to stay away from such places, especially late night.
