Planned incinerator threatens World Heritage site

Date Posted: 2002-03-24

Environmental groups are raising concerns over the planned incinerator plant that the Nakagusuku and Kita Nakagusuku villages are planning to construct in the vicinity of Nakagusuku Castle that was designated as a World Heritage Site two years ago.

Designers of the plant say that it should have a smokestack at least 50 meters high in order to ensure that no particles emitted by the facility will land on its surrounding areas, but a Prefecture Assembly member has found that the final plans for the facility do not mention anything about the smokestack. Local residents are also voicing their concerns.

A spokesman for the villages’ Cleaning Association that would construct and operate the plant defends the plan. “We presented our plan to the Board of Education and they did not raise any concerns. Naturally, we will protect the World Heritage Site as best as we can.” He also said that the association was not aware of any height requirement concerning the facility’s smokestack.
