Japan Update website has facelift

For those of you who have surfed through our Web site at www.japanupdate.com, you may have noticed many changes in the past few months. In order to give you, our readers, a better Web experience, our homepage has undergone a complete facelift. We have added many new features as well as fine-tuned others that were lacking in some aspects.

Perhaps the biggest addition, and the most popular by far, is the new online classifieds pages. Our new classifieds system has made life a little easier for everyone. No longer do we have to spend hours filtering through hundreds of e-mails each week to piece together the week’s classified pages. No longer do you have to drop by our office to give us an ad. Now everything can be done with just a few clicks of the mouse.

We presently offer many types of ads you can submit for free, including automobiles, auto accessories, motorcycles, boats and water gear, dive gear, free pets, miscellaneous for sale, miscellaneous wanted, personals, announcements, lost and found and electronics. We also have a few types of ads you can submit to increase your business revenues. These ads are not free, but they are inexpensive. They include lawn care, lessons offered, business ads, help wanted and services offered.

We are currently working on a system whereby you can submit your business ads and pay for them from the comfort of your very own home. This new system should be in effect by the end of January. Also, due to the overwhelming success of our automobile ads, we are developing a new area just for car sales. This new area will include more features to help sellers reach the market they want and ensure that buyers find exactly what they’re looking for. These new automobile ads will not be free for sellers, but they will be inexpensive and far more effective than they ever were before.

We have also recently given our site a complete facelift. We have done away with the bright red border and plain links and have given you a more visually appealing site. We hope your surfing experience is enhanced by our new appearance.

In hopes of improved ease of use, we have changed our site from a non-frames site to frames. A lot you won’t see much difference or won’t really care. Though many people will argue that frames are not the best way of doing things, they have a way of making sites more user-friendly and navigational, and isn’t that the number-one objective, anyway? Moving to frames has also decreased the length of time it takes to load a page. With Okinawa’s notoriously slow Internet service providers, we felt this was a good move.

On a non-technical note, we have changed the colors to blues and greens because they are the colors of Okinawa. While on island, you’ll see a lot of blue sky and water, and the forests and grass are always green, except maybe in August. Nature is truly at its best here.

Other new features we’ve added include new links pages where you can add your own favorite sites, a better guest book, a message board, information on weekly parties and events, and information on how you can advertise in our paper and on the Web. We have really been working to give you everything you could possibly want on our site.

We have many new features that will take effect in the coming months. Soon, you will be able to pay for all of your advertisements and classifieds online as well as order and pay for business cards, Web design and any other services we offer. We will also be reinstating the Japanese pages soon and are currently at work on Japanese classified pages and a Japanese homepage to give our local readers a better surfing experience. These should also be up in late January or early February.

We’re always looking for ways to improve our site. If you have a suggestion as to how we can better serve you, send an e-mail to webmaster@japanupdate.com. As a gift to our readers, the person with the best recommendation in January will win a gift certificate for two to Sam’s by the Sea. The deadline is Jan. 31.

Thanks for visiting our site. We hope you will be pleased with all of the changes taking place. Stay tuned for more!
