Itinerant Balloon Artist Gives Last Show

Date Posted: 2000-12-29

A Canadian born street performer gave his final performance in Naha City on Christmas Day after travelling the length of the nation in a camping wagon. Blough Whitlet left for Hokkaido on Aug. 23, and then travelled over 3,000 km visiting and performing in 23 different locations. Whitlet, who is married to a Japanese woman, has three children and lives in Miyagi Prefecture, said the purpose of his trip is to give joy and inspiration to people and especially children everywhere he goes.

Whitlet, who makes dogs and other creatures out of balloons, proved that at least children are his staunch fans. As soon as he parked his car outside Palette Kumoji, a large crowd of children of all ages showed up from nowhere, applauding as he inflated one balloon after another and twisted and knotted them into toy dogs and handed them out to the children. About 20 members of his family also arrived to Okinawa to cheer and support him in his final act.
