Okinawa Prefecture population increases

According to figures released by prefecture officials Monday, the number of people living in Okinawa totals 1,318,281. That is an increase of 3.5 percent, or 44,841 people, over past five years. The statistics show that the number of men in Okinawa is up 3.7 percent whereas women are up 3.4 percent. The number of families residing in Okinawa went up a remarkable 10.3 percent.

Naha City is the most populous area in Okinawa with 301,107 residents, followed by Okinawa City, 119,696 and Urasoe City 102,746. Tomishiro Village has increased the number of its residents to over 50,000 and is thus scheduled to become Tomishiro City next year. On the other end of the scale, the three tiniest municipalities are Tonaki Village (population 519), North Daito Island (670) and Tokashiki (730).
