Sales Down Despite Early Govt. Bonuses

Date Posted: 2000-12-22

Sales at the prefecture's department stores and supermarkets remain sluggish at best, despite the the fact that all government employees received their winter bonuses on Dec. 10. Some speculate that one of the reaons is that since the bonuses are paid into the employees' bank accounts instead of in cash as in the past, people don't feel so rich and therefore are holding their wallets tight.

Stores in urban areas in Naha and Okinawa City are especially feeling the pinch, as customers prefer to drive to the new shopping areas outside the city centers, avoiding congestion and lack of parking space. The shops on their part are trying to attract customers by offering entertainment, special discounts and events.
