Naha Land Owner Closes Bridge, Demands Rent

Date Posted: 2000-12-15

A real estate developer has closed a bridge crossing Asato River in Naha City claiming that the city illegally constructed the bridge 30 years ago on land owned by the developer. The developer recently filed a complaint with Naha City Office, claiming back rent for the 30 years the bridge has existed. When the city refused to pay, he closed the bridge with an iron gate.

The developer bought the land at public auction last March for 2.25 million. He then contacted Naha City asking for rent. City officials say that they have no budget to pay. Local residents who have used the bridge for over 30 years have filed several complaints with city officials, urging them to resolve the matter.

The developer admits that he knew that the city would resist paying, but insists that he is within his rights. He says that city officials are to blame for not taking care of the matter properly when they built the bridge.
