Computer Giants Recycle Old Computers

Date Posted: 2000-12-15

IBM Japan and Microsoft announced the founding of a new joint venture to collect and repair old computers which will then be donated to non-profit organizations. They in turn will use the computers in developing nations, in schools and education centers.

The plan calls for starting the project in Okinawa and Hokkaido in February 2001. Both IBM and Microsoft will fund the project and donate new software for the rebuilt computers. Local computer repair companies will be contracted to collect and inspect the old computers.

Supermarket and department store chain San-A has announced that it will participate in the project, as it plans to replace all its computers early next year. San-A officials said that they are happy to participate, as their old computers can be put to some use, instead of ending up in a landfill.
