Korinza Mall to Close for 3 Month Renovation

Date Posted: 2000-12-15

The troubled Korinza Shopping Center in Okinawa City is scheduled to close for three months for alterations, beginning January 1. The facility has been unpopular among shoppers almost from the day it opened, prompting many tenant shops to close. The remaining shops vow to stay put, but at the same time are anxious about the renovation plans.

According to officials, the renewal plans center on finding new tenants that have strong appeal to the shoppers. In order to attract such tenants, Korinza is offering subsidized rent and other incentives. However, so far the attempts have found no takers and many worry that the efforts may fail in the face of competition from new shopping areas in Chatan and Gushikawa that are currently booming.
