Old Folks’ Homes Where Small is Beautiful

Date Posted: 2000-12-15

Two Old People’s Homes that specialize in giving more individual attention by limiting numbers of their inmates, opened last week. One of them, the Tougen Home accommodates no more than 10 people, at a charge of ¥1000-1300 per person per day, covering both food and care.

The other home, Waka Teida, also takes in only few old people. Waka Teida’s owner said “in a large home, the care workers just give medicine to old people. Some of them can be independent with some care, but they actually get worse by just staying in bed and taking medicine they don’t really need.”
