Read My Book on Events After the War

Date Posted: 2000-12-08

Just thought I would draw the attention of JU readers to my recently published book, Women of Okinawa: Nine Voices from a Garrison Island. I lived in Japan in 1997-98 and spent my time interviewing three generations of island women about their memories of life on Okinawa in the aftermath of World War II. My book was just published by Cornell University Press and is available in bookstores throughout the States as well as on amazon.com. For anyone living on Okinawa or anyone interested in Okinawan culture, you should read this book! And I'm not just saying that because I wrote it. Before I went to Okinawa I was frustrated with the lack of literature about the island and its people.

Frankly, I didn't want to read only about the Battle of Okinawa; I wanted to know what happened on the island in the 50+ years after the war. So, I interviewed nine women, who range in age from 22 to 84, and recorded their stories about life vis a vis the American presence on the island. Pick up a copy, and email me with your thoughts. Thanks for reading! Regards, Ruth
