Jumping Fish Released By School Children

Date Posted: 2000-12-08

About 400 young Tokage gobi fish were released in Nakagusuku bay last week by local elementary school students. By next spring the fish, which can hop along land surfaces, will have spawned. Gobies are an endangered species and live only in Nakagusuku bay in Gushikawa city.

In an effort to conserve the species, Okinawa Prefecture started an artificial fertilization program in 1993. Since then a total of 2660 young gobies have been released. Forty eight students helped release the hopping fish. They enjoyed watching the gobies jumping on the mud and going into holes.
