Poisonous Octopuses Bite Public Warned

Date Posted: 2000-12-08

The Okinawa Prefecture Health Center is warning people to beware of poisonous octopuses, following two biting incidents. Two women were recently bitten by octopuses while they were night fishing in Itoman city. The bites caused numbness and swelling. Octopus fishing is a popular activity in Okinawa.

The poisonous types are blue-ridged and tenaga octopuses, both common species here. The blue-ridged octopus has blue dots on the surface of its body and is about 10 cm long. The Tenaga octopus has brown dots on its outer skin and is about 80 cm in length. Both have poisonous saliva.
