Mango Flies Threaten Okinawan Crop

Date Posted: 2000-12-08

Okinawa Prefecture’s Agriculture & Fishery Department officially announced on Friday that mango flies have been found in the country for the first time in Japanese history. The flies have been detected in southern Okinawa and a part of Miyako island. As yet they have not been found to have caused any damage. However, the mango crop might be damaged when the flowering season arrives in February.

The prefecture is encouraging farmers to completely eradicate the flies before it is too late. The flies are close relatives to those found in India and Brazil.
