Kin Town ProjectDate Posted: 2001-08-30 Large-scale projects have been started or planned in order to vitalize the economy of Kin Town and to increase the employment opportunities for further development of the town. Some of the projects are as follows. National Kin Bypass New bypass road is planned that connects Nakagawa to Hamada at the length of 5.6 kilometers and cost of ¥13 billion. The road was originally scheduled to be complete by 2002, but is likely to be delayed to year 2003 or 2004, due to difficulties in construction. Okukubi Dam This new multi-purpose dam will be used for supplying drinking water to the island. This dam is about ten times as large as the current Kin Dam. Negotiations for the land purchase have been under way since 1999, and currently, the coordination work with affiliated organizations is being made. A park will be constructed to the shores of the dam, with the surrounding nature of mangroves top be preserved. Multipurpose parks and greenery are also planned to the site and consideration to the use of the land formerly used for military facilities such as Ginbaru and Blue Beach Maneuver Site are an essential part of the plan. Kin Thermal Power Plant Along with the expected expansion in demand for electricity on the island, Okinawa Electric Power Company is taking the initiative in this project, which is scheduled to become operational in 2003. Surroundings of the plant will be equipped with various devices that monitor the air quality around the facility. The temperature of the cooling water will also be checked 24 hours a day. As a part of the construction agreement, the company is building a park in the center of the town’s old entertainment district where people can hold concerts and other events. The compensation for the landowners will be made by the end of this year, and the groundbreaking is planned to take place at the beginning of the next year. |
