Parents sue Ryukyu Univ. hospital for negligence

Date Posted: 2001-08-30

The parents of a 3-year-old girl who suffers from serious disabilities brought a lawsuit against the Hospital of the University of the Ryukyus to the Naha District Court on Friday. The parents are asking a compensation of ¥146.7 million from the hospital. In their lawsuit, the parents allege that that their daughter’s disabilities were caused by negligence and wrong choices made by the hospital while she was in their care.

According to the plaintiffs, they accepted a recommendation by a doctor at the hospital last August to have their daughter undergo surgery. Their daughter had been suffering from congenital heart disease, and even though the hole in her heart was gradually diminishing, the hospital doctors recommended an operation. Right after the operation, they say, her brain was found seriously damaged. They claim that the natural healing of their daughter could have been anticipated, and that the doctors could have chosen a safer operation.
