Young graduates shun job fairs, no idea of future

Date Posted: 2001-08-30

A recruiting fair for college students scheduled to graduate next spring was held Monday at the Okinawa Convention Center.

The Prefectural Office’s Employment Section and The Employment Security Office sponsored the fair. 38 firms from mainland Japan had been invited to participate. In total, about 2,500 job positions were offered, but only 129 students showed up for the fair, 64 less than the previous year. Organizers said that it shows that most students in Okinawa prefer to have their career on island.

There was another job fair on Aug. 8 for invited companies from Okinawa. 672 students participated, although the figure was 230 less than last year. This also showed the recent trend of students graduating from college without a clear idea about their career.
