Ex police officer sent to court for assault

The Okinawa Prefectural Police Department sent a report on a 60-year-old former police sergeant to prosecutors on Tuesday, on charges of an assault while acting as a special public official.

According to the investigation, the former sergeant allegedly beat up a 52-year-old farmer with a nightstick four years ago in Tokashiki Island, where the suspect was stationed at the time. The suspect got upset that the farmer did not listen to his orders after some trouble.

The farmer sustained injuries requiring ten daysí hospital care as s result of the beating. In addition, two policemen who allegedly failed to conduct a satisfactory investigation on the case were dismissed as a disciplinary punishment. Although the charged former sergeant voluntarily retired from the police force two years ago, he reportedly admits the charges and recognizes that his act was excessive. The incident came to light when the victim asked the police for more explanation.
