Date Posted: 2001-08-22

Okinawa Prefectural Office, Agriculture and Fisheries Section, announced Tuesday that they will take the initiative in promoting the sales shiqwasa, a small-size relative of lemon produced in Okinawa. The fruit is currently commonly available only in Okinawa.

At first, the plan calls for selling the fruit through eight Washita Shops in mainland Japan, and at wholesale markets in Tokyo and Osaka. The next step would be to sell directly to restaurant franchises.

Originally, Shiqwasa was sold directly from farmersí houses, ands later it was made available at local supermarkets. This is the first time for Shiqwasa to be sold outside of Okinawa in large scale. Officials expect Shiqwasa to become the next Goya, the bitter melon, which has become very popular nationwide recently.
