Hospital Overdoses Baby By Ten Times

Date Posted: 2000-12-01

Ryukyu University Hospital admitted on Monday that it had given medicine to a baby at ten times the correct dosage. The infant, who is less than a year old, was being treated for a chronic breathing problem and had been visiting the hospital regularly. The previous Wednesday the hospital prescribed a drug that was at a 20 percent rather than a two percent concentration.

After the baby had been taken home it was given the medicine three times. Then two days later the hospital realized its mistake and rang the parents. The infant was brought back to the hospital for a blood test. The concentration of the drug in the blood was more than twice as high as it should have been. The baby was kept in the hospital overnight for observation. It was released the next day when the concentration of medicine in the blood had returned to normal.
