Endangered Bats at Proposed New Airport Site

Date Posted: 2000-12-01

Last week three species of bats were found where a new Ishigaki Airport is planned to be built. The three species are Yaeyama Horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus perditus), Kagura bats (Hipposideros turpis), and Ryukyu bats (Miniopterus fuscus).

They are endangered species with a strong possibility of becoming extinct in the near future. Only 50 Yaeyama Horseshoe bats are left and 200 Ryukyku bats remain. Many of the three species of bats live in a cave on the west side of the proposed runaway.
