Proposed U.S Military Site Has Dugong Traces

Date Posted: 2000-12-01

Last week feeding traces of dugongs found near the proposed site of a new American military facility, makes it a bad place to build it, says a local pressure group. The Dugong Network Okinawa examined the feeding area near Henoko Beach, 400 meters offshore of Camp Schwab.

Taro Hosokawa head of the group said “we have reconfirmed the importance of the feeding areas off Higashi Beach. Also, we found water pollution due to red clay and disturbance to the feeding area because of amphibious trucks. We cannot accept the construction of the base here.”
