Omi gives green light for Awase reclamation project

Date Posted: 2002-03-14

Minister for Okinawa Koji Omi announced in Tokyo on March 8 that work on the Awase tideland reclamation project would officially start after being postponed last August. Despite the large number of people opposing the project for reasons of conservation, the ministerís decision makes it possible to begin the first phase of the project, the construction of a road to what will later be filled in as land. Although both the Japanese and the Okinawan governments regarded the move as a matter of course, project opponents strongly criticized the unilateral decision. Shutaro Uchima, representing an opposing group, said that it was too early to ascertain whether a seaweed transplantation experiment had been successful or not and also asserted that the demand for the filled-in land had not been precisely calculated.
