Since the murder last month of a mainland Japanese woman in a beach bathroom on Taketomi island, new security measures have been taken. The island has no police station but has had the Tsuken Island Security Office since 1997. Since it started there had been no crimes until the October killing. Now its staff will patrol the beach and camping facilities on the island.
