Y Plate Controversy Continues

Date Posted: 2000-11-23

In response to RF in the last issue about bad driving, I agree completely with every word that you wrote. I also agree with the person that originally posted the article. Perhaps the author of the original article has never experienced the sheer joy of driving in downtown Tokyo during rush hour.

Yes, the Okinawan people are wonderful folks, and those not making an attempt to make friends with the locals are indeed missing out on an incredible opportunity, as well as a life enriching experience. This is my third time on-island, and I love it here, but sometimes all of the finger pointing has a negative impact on my morale.

How you can doze off at an intersection is beyond my understanding, unless you happen to live in what passes for the countryside over here ( e.g. farming community ). My wife is Okinawan, and we frequently have members of our Okinawan family traveling with us, and we routinely are accompanied ( much to our disliking ) by some idiot 50 cars back that has a massive sub-woofer installed in his/her trunk. The entertainment this in-duh-vidual provides consists of loud drum beats, what passes as clapping hands, and a lot of foul language broadcasted at a power level even FEN has to envy. Want to improve relations, un-plug these Y plated offenders. Who knows? By doing that, we may even be able to rid ourselves of those young motorcyclists who insist on revving their engines late at night while driving past American occupied apartments off-base. 8)
