Chuckwow - Where Life's Always One Big Party!

By: Elena Sinnemaki

Chuckwow... at first glance you might think, "Oh, a band with a guy named Chuck who is, well, wow." However, Clay, Chris and Rob, none of whom are named Chuck, have far surpassed "wow" and Okinawa knows it! They are the three extremely energetic and lively members of Chuckwow who have been playing together for just over a year.

Looking especially pleased with the success of the band so far, lead guitarist/vocalist Clay smiled and in his very mellow tone told Japan Update, "We are having fun!" Lead bassist/vocalist Chris laughed at the understatement. With the upcoming release of a compilation CD entitled Chapter S, the members of Chuckwow could all but hide their excitement.

"Chapter S is a compilation of 17 bands from right here on Okinawa. We were fortunate enough to be included on this great project where our song "World According to Rob" (W.A.R.) will be featured. Toshiba EMI will be releasing it on January 16, 2000... it's going to be awesome!" Clay candidly explained.

Other than the single that will be released on Chapter S, Chuckwow has been going non-stop since their inception in 1999. They've performed live at Peaceful Love Rock Festival and Bang Holiday at the Okinawa Convention Center in Ginowan this year, and are regulars at the Hideaway.

So how did it come about that three young Americans ended up doing what they each love, together, out here in the Pacific? Chris has been on Okinawa for 15 years since he arrived with his parents as a military brat. He decided to stay and began playing with various bands around island until he hooked up with Chuckwow. He has no plans to leave the island anytime soon. Clay and Rob (drummer) on the other hand are both active duty military Jump Masters assigned to Torii Station in Yomitan.

When asked about their music style and influences, Clay exposed his bright smile yet again and described Chuckwow's music as "Happy Core Punk". They add their obvious enthusiasm and, well "happy-go-lucky" energy easily on stage when adding their own style to cover songs from Greenday, NoFX, Blink 182, and Operation Ivy, just to name a few. "World According to Rob", which, yes, is written in loving adoration of their drummer Rob, is a perfect example of how they've incorporated that style into their music.

Chuckwow is currently working on a 2nd recording which they hope to have completed by Christmas. However, they continue to play all over island while having a great time. "There are so many people here who have supported and helped us all along. We cannot even close this interview without thanking them for all that they've done.

"First of all, the Hideaway lets us jump in there and do our own thing which we love them for; Fujiyama's, Seventh Heaven and Morrigan's also put up with us and we much appreciate it. Jason and Zero Faith are awesome! We have such an amazing time with them and Jason is and always has been totally great. Justin, who is our sit-in trumpet player, is all that and a bag of chips! He sports his stumpy blue trumpet and just plays his *horn* off! We love him! A big thanks to all the other punkers who come out to hear us play, whether they like us or not. We so appreciate them and love seeing them out there.

"And a most special, special, special thank you and shout to Nami Higa at PM agency for always helping us out and letting people out there know that Chuckwow is here!"

"So what does Chuckwow mean?" we finally asked the guys.

Clay smiled yet again while Chris giggled, "Literally, it's Thai for 'fly a kite'. Of course there is another meaning, but we'll just leave it there."
