Old Photos Show Vanished Way of Life

Date Posted: 2000-11-23

80 photographs depicting island life around 1912 have been donated to the Okinawa City Hometown Museum. The pictures were taken by an artist Sessou Okada (1885-1964) from Osaka. His granddaughter, Kazuko Koda had heard that not many old photographs of Okinawa survived, so she sent them to the museum.

The pictures include people wearing traditional Ryukyu kimonos, people with and without shoes, houses in Shuri, Higashimachi market etc. The quality of the photographs is very high and they will be useful for understanding Okinawa’s history. The museum will display the pictures from to January 25 to 28. They do not know the exact locations of some of the photographs, so they will appeal for information from public.
